Workshop:  The palaeography and structure of church court documents
Palaeography is one of the keys to unlocking pre-Census documents and this practical session will give you the opportunity to identify and read cause papers from the eighteenth century using material from consistory and archdeaconry courts.  It will also give you an insight into the language used in the procedures and the information that can be found in different types of cause, particularly those of testamentary business and marriage, where depositions of witnesses can be very informative about family relationships.
