Dr George REDMONDS

Your Surname is Unique

The introductory part of the lecture reviews the major steps forward in surname studies over the last fifty years - from P H Reaney, through the work of the English Surname Survey, to Bryan Sykes and the Y-chromosome. This will be followed by advice on what to expect from the numerous works of reference. The central theme of the talk is concerned with the future - with the new sources and techniques that are now available. Recent publications offer local and family historians exciting research possibilities but a disciplined approach is necessary if these are to be fully exploited.
